specialising in the work of Jill M. Aldersley

Jill Aldersley lived and worked in the Lake District from 1967 until her death in October 2007, painting the local scenery in all its seasons, from autumn woodlands to snowy mountain tops.

Born in wartime London of Yorkshire ancestry, her first memories were of living through the 1947 winter in a millstone grit farmhouse, 1100 ft up on Holme Moss and she loved mountain scenery ever since. The family then moved to Lancashire and Jill was educated at Preston, attaining her NND in oil painting and litho, followed by ATC in Manchester. After two years teaching art in Aspatria she came to work part-time at Ambleside Studio Pottery and started painting professionally, soon converting from oil to watercolour, revelling in its translucency and its capacity to convey the subtleties of mood in this ever-changing landscape. A keen fellwalker and rock climber, she painted farther afield too, regularly in Skye and Eigg, less frequently in the Alps, Himalayas and other wild mountain regions.

Jill exhibited annually as a member of the Lake Artists' Society, also with the Ambleside & District Art Society and Kendal Art Society, of which she was President. She held her own exhibitions every few years and showed work at the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters.

The prints are mostly of her Lake District work, printed by photo litho. Jill also started a range of laser prints from her watercolours of the Cuillins of Skye.
